Mohamad Amode Vayid, Grand Officer of the Order of the Star and Key of the Indian Ocean (GOSK), Companion of the Order of St. Michael and St. George (CMG), is remembered as an outstanding person, erudite, passionate and a true patriot. Mohamad had a rich career spanning both the private and public sector. As a social and political observer and columnist, he published a collection of thought-provoking articles. His wife, children and "les amis de Mohamad Vayid" wish to pay a special tribute to him by creating this website dedicated to his work and achievements, a rich legacy to be shared with the Mauritian nation and to the world at large.

Mohamad Vayid held an Honours degree in History and Constitutional Law from Edinburgh University and management qualifications from Bradford University (U.K) and I.M.D Lausanne, Switzerland.  Mohamad was a Fellow of the U.K Chartered Management Institute, and a Member of the Institute of Directors, London.  He was appointed C.M.G. for public service by H. M. the Queen and Grand Officer of the Order of the Star and Key of the Indian Ocean by the President of the Republic of Mauritius.

Mohamad has had a varied career spanning both the private and the public sector.  He was a senior executive of BAT Co. Ltd. in Mauritius, London and Africa, occupying various positions as Chairman and Managing Director of BAT Companies and as Coordinator for Africa and the West Indies, based in London.

Public Sector

In the public sector, Mohamad Vayid has been Chairman of the Central Housing Authority, the Mauritius Broadcasting Corporation, the National Housing Development Company, the Mauritius Research Council, the Mauritius Oceanography Institute, the National Economic and Social Council, the Islamic Cultural Centre, and the English-Speaking Union.

Mohamad was also a former Chairman of the Mauritius Chamber of Commerce and Industry and of the Mauritius Employers Federation.  Besides, he was the Chairman and Managing Director of Strategic Management Consultants Ltd, which he founded in 1989, and a Director of investment companies in the financial services sector.

As a social and political observer and columnist, Mohamad Vayid worked closely with the press. He wrote a collection of thought-provoking articles and gave many interviews. He also collaborated with Mrs Touria Prayag, Editor-in-Chief of Weekly and Mr Yvan Martial, historian and journalist, on a weekly radio programme on Kool FM (MBC).

Born in Port Louis, Mauritius, on 23 February 1935, he passed away in Cape Town, South Africa, on 5 May 2013, at the age of 78.
